The city of Brownsville is a beautiful town located along the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Brownsville became the first established town in Minnesota Territory in 1848. Today it is a quaint community with local amenities and activities for residents and visitors traveling the Great River Road on Highway 61.

Brownsville is a bustling community with an average population of 500 residents. In the fall, visitors gather around the town to watch the Tundra Swan migration. Currently, the Brownsville area provides recreation for residents and visitors. Wildcat Landing (owned by Houston County) has a public boat landing and well-maintained, riverside campsite facilities. Up the channel, Lawrence Lake Marina offers bait, boat rentals, boat slips, snacks, fishing licenses, gift store and antiques. To catch a glimpse of Brownsville history, stop at the Community Center during morning hours and check out the Historical Room.

Brownsville is governed by a mayor and four trustees. The city services include a volunteer fire department, first responder unit, Lions club, VFW, VFW auxiliary and other active organizations. Our community is also served by two churches, St. Patrick Catholic Church and Zion Evangelical Church.
